Lapiths and Centaurs – Family tree 20

Lapiths and Centaurs - Family tree 20 - Greek mythology

In the tree above, the line of Lapithes was connected to the Peneus River by Stilbe “the one who shines with beauty” who would have united with Apollo, god of psychic light. But the Peneus-Stilbe filiation only appears among the late historians Diodorus of Sicily (1st century BC) and Pausanias (2nd century AD)

Likewise, the filiations Stilbe-Lapithes, Periphas-Antion and Antion-Ixion appear only in Diodore. This family tree should therefore be viewed with caution.

Likewise, in the ancient texts, very many lineages of Lapiths are mentioned but their genealogy is most often confused or little attested.

Ixion being the illustration of a serious spiritual error, we have chosen to group on this page two other great spiritual errors illustrated by the Aloades, Otos and Ephialtes, and by the Molionides, Eurytos and Kteatos.

A description of the first two errors is given on the page ” IXION AND THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE LAPITHS AND THE CENTAURS“. The third error, the one illustrated by the Molionids, is dealt with on the page “LATEST ACHIEVEMENTS OF HERACLES“.

Ixion is the symbol of a very advanced seeker in spirit – he drank nectar of immortality – who believes he has reached overmind and is therefore the equal of Zeus. He pretended to unite with Hera. Zeus, to punish him for his presumption, attached him to a winged wheel which he threw through the air and Ixion whirled there forever. Ixion is the grandfather of the Centaurs, images of seekers who have not purified their lower vital. But he is also the human father of Pirithoos, the friend of Theseus who, symbolically, corrects the errors of the seeker in the beginnings of the path.

The Molionides, Eurytos and Kteatos, represent respectively a will to power and a will to conquer still tainted with ego. They were defeated by Heracles during his last exploits, after the twelve labors.

The Aloades, Otos and Ephialtes, illustrate another form of spiritual pride. According to Homer, only Orion had more noble beauty. But they planned to stack the Ossa on Olympus and on the Ossa, the Mount Pelion in order to assault the sky. They would have achieved it if they had reached adulthood. But Apollo destroyed them.

Styx and the Sirens – Family tree 19

Styx and the Sirens - Family tree 19 - Greek mythology

This page presents the lineages from Oceanos which relate to the purification / liberation process. A general description of these lines can be found on the page ” OCEANOS: RIVER-GODS SCAMANDER AND ACHELOOS AND OCEANIDES“. An overview of the three main lines also appears in the “Family tree of Oceanus – Purification and liberation“: they concern the descendants of the three main rivers, Inachos “the evolution of concentration”, the Peneus “evolution of mastery “and Asopos which could indicate progress in achieving” equality “.

We have established the line of Peleus and Achilles from the river Asopos and his daughter Aegina because no author mentions Actor, father of Menoitios and grandfather of Patroclus, as human father of Aeacus, the latter being father of Peleus and grandfather of Achilles. A line is indeed continued by a woman if there is an exclusive fertilization by a god, such as Niobe, Io, Stilbe, Europa, Danae, Alcmene, Protogenia, etc. and six among the seven Pleiades.

Apart from the major river gods, there are many rivers representing particular currents of consciousness-energy which intervene in precise phases of yoga. Thus the Alpheus is used by Heracles to purify the stables of Augias which represent the slag from the first light experiences. Eridan intervenes in the myth of Phaethon. The Scamander named Xanthe by the gods, the Simois, the Rhodios and the Rhesos are rivers of Troad which concern the advanced seekers.

Many Oceanids also come from Oceanos – according to Hesiod there are more than three thousand. They are nymphs generally attached to running waters, sometimes also these rivers themselves.

They represent divine qualities pouring out on the earth, qualities that man can contact. Among them are:

-Metis who was swallowed by Zeus and gave birth to Athena. She represents supreme wisdom.

-Styx, the river of the underground world, the divine force that puts everything back in the right order.

-Tyche which represents the divine plan and Electra, the divine light.

-Perseis, the transformation, and Pleione who fills (the chasm between the Spirit and the matter).

– Dione “evolution towards union”, who is united to Tantalus “aspiration”.

Olympian complementary gods – Diagram 18

Olympian complementary gods - Diagram 18 - Greek mythology

The 12 gods of Olympus are described in Family Tree 17 and in detail on the page “THE TWELVE OLYMPIAN GODS“. They can be grouped by pairs of complementary as described in detail on the page “THE COMPLEMENTARY GODS“.

Because at this level of overmind, it is not so much couples of opposites as complementary, even if myths sometimes present them in conflict, such as Zeus and Hera.

To Zeus, symbol of the indefinite expansion of consciousness, corresponds Hera, the power of limitation which is an exact adaptation to the movement of Becoming according to divine order.

To Poseidon, the abolition of the ego by the cleaning of the subconscious, corresponds Demeter, expression of what guides towards the realization of the union.

To Hermès, the emerging force which leads towards the manifestation of the overmind in humanity, source of Knowledge, corresponds Hestia, the aspiration, the law of Grace which helps in the progressive realization of a perfect equality which guarantees the growth of the inner fire, Agni, the sacred fire.

Leto’s children, Apollo and Artemis, are face to face, expressing the two powers of the psychic being that awaken in man, the vision of Truth and the Righteous Act.

The last four gods are not yet positioned in their final place. Even if Aphrodite, an expression of evolving love, is married to Hephaestus, the source of new forms, she is currently the partner of her lover Ares, the force of forms renewal. Because, to progress, love still needs the process of destruction of forms, humanity being not yet ready for their transformation without the need for destruction.

It is therefore Athena, the symbol of the inner master who leads man towards the improvement and mastery of his outer being, which is currently positioned opposite Hephaestus.

Gods of Olympus – Family tree 17

Gods of Olympus - Family tree 17 - Greek mythology

The twelve gods of Olympus all belong to the descendants of the Titan Cronos, either because they are the brothers and sisters of Zeus, or because they are the children of the latter.

However, their field of activity varies when they are born from unions of Zeus with a Titanide other than Rhea.

These gods belong to the plane of the overmind which is the highest of the planes of mental consciousness. They represent not only principles or archetypes and external forces which work for the progress of humanity, but also forces which are in us and which we can mobilize, according to the word of Origen “Remember that in you are all the gods of Olympus”.

They are described in detail on the page “THE TWELVE OLYMPIAN GODS“.

After their victory over the Titans, the three sons of Cronos shared the world between them:

-Zeus took the kingdom of the superconscious

-Poseidon that of the subconscious

-Hades that of the unconscious

But they kept the surface of the earth, the conscious, as their common kingdom.

Hades, however, is not one of the gods of Olympus because he represents the plane of bodily awareness at the cellular level to which man does not yet have access.

Hera, Zeus’ wife, counterbalances and limits his expansion power.

Hestia is the keeper of the inner fire, the psychic flame.

Demeter, the goddess of Yoga, works for union.

Ares and Hephaestus govern the destruction and creation of new forms.

Athena embodies “the inner master” for the growth of discerning intelligence and for the organization and perfect mastery of the outer being.

Apollo and Artemis symbolize respectively the light and the force of purification of the psychic being.

Aphrodite is the symbol of the evolution of love in man.

And Hermès is the symbol of knowledge at the overmind level which is beginning to manifest itself in humanity.

Priam, Hector and Paris – Family tree 16

Priam, Hector and Paris - Family tree 16 - Greek mythology

Electra is the fifth Pleiad and corresponds to the plane of the “illumined mind” (See Family Tree 7 and Family Tree 8 “). Recall that the seven Pleiades are daughters of Atlas, himself the son of Iapetus. They therefore relate to the ascent of the planes of mental consciousness.

The descendants of Electra include the royal lines of the Trojans. Troy being located to the far East of Great Greece at the time of Homer, in present-day Turkey, these lines represent the seekers who stabilized in themselves the “illumined mind”. But it was the result of a conquest in the mind and a rejection of matter, according to the meaning of the name Tros. The Trojan War which pitted the Trojan coalition against the Achaean coalition is the symbol of an internal struggle to determine which is the best way to achieve stabilizing the next plane of mental consciousness, that of the “intuitive mind” represented by Helen (see Family tree 13).

This line is studied in detail in the page ” THE ROYAL TROJAN LINEAGE: LAOMEDON, PRIAM, HECTOR, PARIS AND AENEAS “.

Dardanos is considered to be the founder of the lineage.

His grandson Tros established the Trojans in the region of Phrygia, “where the inner fire burns”. He had three sons:

-Ilos, the one who seeks greater “liberation”, the founder of Troy.

-Assarakos, the one who perfects “equality” which is an “equanimity” extended to all bodies. It is from this line that the founders of the future Troy will come, in the descendants of Anchises and Aeneas, when the Truth will have been established in humanity.

-Ganymedes, the one who works to make “joy” grow in himself.

But it is the descendants of Ilos “liberation in spirit” that governed Troy until the war. His son Laomedon, twice, will be perjury, which illustrates serious errors of yoga. He represents the seeker who refuses for lack of humility to recognize that he is not the architect of his own liberation.

With Priam “the redeemed”, the seeker is given a second chance. But he joins Hecabe “the one who is out of the incarnation”. Thus continues with the children of the Priam-Hecabe couple the Trojan error: among them, the divine Hector and Paris renamed Alexander “the one who repels man”, that is to say who rejects the incarnation.

Tantalus and Agamemnon – Family tree 15

Tantalus and Agamemnon - Family tree 15 - Greek mythology

This page presents the Tantalus Family Tree. The corresponding myths are studied in the page “THE LINEAGE OF TANTALUS: PELOPS, ATREUS AND AGAMEMNON“.

Tantalus’ parentage with Plouto and Atlas is only mentioned by late historians and therefore unreliable. It appears here only for the record.

Tantalus is mentioned by Pindar as a familiar with the gods with whom he shares nectar and ambrosia, and even as an immortal: he is the image of a seeker familiar with the forces of the overmind, having achieved liberation in spirit.

This achievement which marks the beginning of the lineage therefore supposes a very advanced degree of progression in the mind and in yoga in general.

His name could be built around the root Tal “to endure”.

The punishment of Tantalus, like that of Sisyphus and Tityos, takes place in the kingdom of Hades, that is to say in the bodily unconscious. It illustrates the fact that the adventurer of consciousness whose aspiration has descended into the body to the cellular level cannot benefit from its results which he nevertheless approaches very closely.

His son Pelops “the vision of the shadow” or “the one who approaches the vision” is known to have been sacrificed by his father and then resurrected by the gods, then provided with an ivory shoulder by Demeter: the adventurer of consciousness then half crosses the “Door of the gods”, of immortality. Pelops conquered by hard struggle his wife Hippodamia “the one who has the mastery of the vital” or “the one who has the mastery of the force”. He then founded the Olympic Games, symbols of the end of “personal yoga” and the beginning of yoga for all humanity.

Pelops’ son Atreus is “the one who does not tremble” and who opens the line of Atreides. Atreus is the symbol of the achievement of “equality” and of a “powerful determination” which support the will to transform, linked to a strong capacity for endurance. It is this determination transmitted to his sons Agamemnon and Menelaus which will allow their victory over the Trojans, and therefore the definitive reorientation of yoga.

Agamemnon, “powerful will and discerning intelligence” is according to Homer “the most greedy of all the Greeks”, that is to say the symbol of a very strong aspiration.

Her brother Menelaus “the one who desires freedom” or “the one who remains faithful to his vision” is the husband of Helen “the evolution towards freedom”, cause of the Trojan War.

Odysseus – Family tree 14

Odysseus - Family tree 14 - Greek mythology

This page presents the family tree of Deion “he who works for the reunification of consciousness”. He is the seventh son of Aeolus, who belongs to the line of Iapetus “the ascent of the planes of consciousness” (cf. Family tree 10 and Family tree 7). The descendants of the other Aeolus children appear in family trees 11, 12 and 13.

The detailed study of this family tree is in page “THE LINEAGE OF DEION: ODYSSEUS, PATROCLES AND TELEMACHUS

Deion had two sons, Actor and Cephalus.

-Actor “the one who guides” or “the right movement of opening consciousness to the spirit” had a son Menoitios who works for “what is accessible to the spirit”. The latter is the father of Patroclus “the glorious ancestors”, that is to say “the achievements of the past”. Patroclus is the close friend of Achilles of which he is also the cousin (Cf. Family tree 25).

-The other son, Cephalus “the head”, is most likely the father or grandfather of Arcisios “the one who endures” although no reliable source has come down to us. Arcisios is the grandfather of Odysseus, the hero of the Odyssey. He is the symbol of the seeker who works to achieve in himself a transparency in order to allow the free circulation of the two currents which unite spirit and matter.

On this page also appears the maternal line of Ulysses which is well attested. This line comes from the last Pleiad, Maia, “the one who is totally subject to divine consciousness”, symbol of the highest plane in the mind, “the overmind”. Her son is the god Hermès “, a just movement of receptivity-consecration”. His grandson is Autolycos “the one who is his own light to himself”, because the seeker is at this stage united to the divine light and therefore his own guide. Autolycos is the father of Anticlia “humility”, mother of Ulysses.

Penelope and Helen – Family tree 13

Penelope and Helen - Family tree 13 - Greek mythology

The seven Pleiades are daughters of Atlas, himself the son of Iapetus. They therefore relate to the ascent of the planes of mental consciousness (See Family tree 7 and Family tree 8).

Taygete is the sixth Pleiad and corresponds to the plane of the “intuitive mind” which concerns the adventurers of consciousness, that is to say, very advanced seekers on the spiritual path. This plan is described on the page “IAPETUS: ATLAS AND THE PLEIADES”.

The line of Taygete appearing above is described in the page “THE ROYAL LINEAGE OF SPARTA: LEDA, PENELOPE AND HELEN”.

Taygete gave birth to Lacedaemon “the divinity which resounds with force” who himself united with Sparta “what is sown” or “what arises”. It is both a spiritual ascent to new heights and an “emergence” of memories of evolution that present themselves for transformation. For the spiritual process is a movement of ascension and integration into the lower planes of what has been conquered on the higher planes of the spirit.

Lacedaemon fathered Amyclas “the one who must achieve the state without desire”, grandfather of Oibalos who complete the work on fears in the deep layers of consciousness because he united with Gorgophone “the one who kills the Gorgon”.

Oibalos had two sons and a daughter:

-Icarios “a just movement of consciousness”, the father of Penelope “the vision of the thread weaving of consciousness” towards greater freedom.

-Tyndareus, the father of the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, “strength” and “great gentleness”, as well as Helen “the evolution towards greater freedom” and Clytemnestra “a renowned wisdom”.

– Arene “that which evolves in a right way” who united to Aphareus “that which is without veil, without masks”, that is to say “in truth”. The latter belongs to the line of Perieres, the sixth son of Aeolus. The couple had two sons: “the overall vision (in truth)” and Lynceus “the vision of details (in truth)”.

Jason – Family tree 12

Jason - Family tree 12 - Greek mythology

This page presents the family trees of four sons of Aeolus out of the seven. Aeolus belongs to the line of Iapetus “the ascent of the planes of consciousness” (cf. Family tree 10 and Family tree 7).

The Sisyphus family tree is presented in Family Tree 11.

The four lines presented here relate respectively:

-Athamas: the first contacts with the psychic being until the establishment of an inner law in view of integrity.

-Magnes: aspiration, necessary for engagement on the path

-Salmoneus: the spiritual claim.

-Cretheus: the first great spiritual experience

The main characters of these lines also intervene in myths which are studied separately. In particular, the myth of Jason and the Argonauts conquering the Golden Fleece is studied in the page “JASON AND THE GOLDEN FLEECE“. It concerns the beginnings of the path until the encounter with the “master” (or the particular path of the seeker) then the progression until the first great spiritual experience. But the seeker, by a lack of consecration and because of an overly pressing ego, cannot keep the new possibilities which appeared during this first experience: the children of Jason and Medea are killed.

The lineages of the other two other children of Aeolus, Perieres and Deioneus, are presented in Family tree 13 and Family tree 14, respectively.

Sisyphus and Bellerophon – Family tree 11

Sisyphus and Bellerophon - Family tree 11 - Greek mythology

Sisyphus, son of Aeolus, belongs to the line of Iapetus “the ascent of the planes of consciousness” (cf. Family tree 10 and Family tree 7). It is studied in detail as well as his descendants in the page ” THE FIRST FIVE CHILDREN OF AEOLUS: SISYPHUS AND HIS SON BELLEROPHON, ATHAMAS, MAGNES, SALMONEUS AND CRETHEUS“.

Its name means “skill of mental awareness”. It mainly represents “effort” in yoga or “tapasya” in the Indian tradition. This effort is directed towards perfecting the intellect or mental of reason because his wife is Méropé, the third Pleiad (Cf. Family tree 8). The seeker of truth must establish in himself a thought purified from the influences of the vital, free from opinions, prejudices, ideologies and creeds, and free from all influence.

The result of this work must be the victory over illusions because the grandson of Sisyphus is Bellerophon, the winner of the chimera.

Another descendant of Sisyphus by women is the great healer Asclepius, the ancestor of doctors. However, it is a medicine illuminated by psychic inner light because the divine father of Asclepius is Apollo.

The punishment inflicted on Sisyphus by Zeus is famous: “Sisyphus had to roll a huge rock on the side of a mountain. But while he was about to go beyond the top, he fell down, swept away by the weight of the rock and had to tirelessly start this exhausting work”. However, this work does not concern the ordinary seeker but the adventurers of consciousness who do yoga in the body. Indeed, the punishment takes place in the kingdom of Hades after the death of Sisyphus, and therefore at the level of the bodily unconscious. The myth then means that “effort” is almost useless when it comes to working on the body at the cellular level.
